I wrote "Doctor"...what's my mother going to do? - Steven Wright
"Sure... take over a law firm, make some changes, do some good Angel..." he was mocking himself for the moment, "What the hell was I thinking?" Mostly the mocking was coming after realizing that if he actually wanted to allow or the overspending that Fred was doing down in R&D that he'd actually have to start running the firm... instead of firing sixty-three percent of the staff. So now he was going through applications from Temp Agencies and trying to make sense of all the questions.
Eve had already dropped by a few times, peppering their conversation with cute little nicknames like Champ and Kiddo, and he had to wonder just how old she really was... really because she couldn't just have that sort of attitude because she had this job. He figured there had to be something else in it... in her that made her think she was so special. Like this person who had opted to fill out their application in a purple glitter pen that smelled like grape.
"No."
Slipping the application to the rejected pile he kept looking for something to stand out, mostly because he knew that the moment he picked them it was more than just saying they had a good application, it was starting another mindless process of interviews and screenings and drug testing and demon blood counts and all sorts of random things he didn't even want to think of. All he wanted was to just go crack a few demon heads open for the black market toe supplier ring that he'd just found out about. But instead he was reading about how 'Margaret' had hopes of being a school teacher but thought that being a secretary was a good job too. Or how 'Brenton' thought he was clever for putting down 9-1-1 for his emergency contact with a winkie face next to it.
"Another no," pressing his finger to the intercom button he called for Harmony.
"Yeah Angel?"
"Can you... just come take these things?"
"What things?"
He really didn't want to have to get a new secretary too, but she never seemed quite on top of things.
"The mountain of applications."
"Okie Dokie Bossie... Boss.. Angel."
Shaking his head he sorted all of the applications into as neat of a stack as he could manage, all of the loose edges not matching up right, and the staples on some of them catching against corners of others. Harmony came in and he handed the stack to her trying to convince himself he'd look at them later.
"Can you just do me a favor and take out all the ones with glitter pens, smilie faces in the margins, or all lowercase letters?"
"Not a problem Angel, should I filter the new ones too?"
"New ones?"
"Yep! Three more agencies sent theirs over."
He nearly let his head hit the desk, but instead he just pressed his fingertips to his forehead trying to keep away the headache that was starting to build up, "Yeah... just... yeah do that."
